vegtable / vegetarian pasties

Options
Hi everyone,

when in cornwall last month we stopped to try a local vegtable pastie it was really tasty but at £1.90 each felt it was a rip off.
I told my husband I could make these for next to nothing and he said .....
"you couldnt make these" ..........so today Ive decided to prove him wrong.
one small problem tho, I need a recipe lol.

Any sugestions much appreciated.

There's no such thing as a local vegetable Cornish pastie! There are just a lot of variations on a theme. I make mine with potato, carrot and onion diced small, seasoned with lots of black pepper, chopped parsley (fresh not dried), salt and grated cheese.
  • I have a vegan recipe book with a recipe for vegetable pasties which you might like:

    vegetable pasties

    400g s/r flour
    200g marg
    250g potatoes
    250g carrots
    200g leeks
    250g onions
    3 cloves garlic
    100g red lentils
    olive oil
    1 heaped tsp bouillon
    s & p

make pastry & put in fridge to chill
peel & chop the potatoes, carrots, leeks, onions & garlic (should be in 1/2cm cubes)
fry the veg gently in olive oil, when they soften add 500ml/1 pint cold water & lentils & bring to the boil. when the lentils are soft add the bouillon & season.
cool the mixture, then make the pasties
bake in a hot oven on a greased baking tray for about 35 - 40 mins (gas 6, 200C) until browned :)

I'm a bit lazy and useless in the kitchen and use this method.

I buy a pack of ready made pastry and roll it out then use campbells condensed soups as fillings. You just get a spoonful and dollop it into the pastry. It works out about 10p for each pasty and I make about 10 and freeze and bake as required.

Cheese and onion ones are made but mashing potato with grated cheese and grated onion for a greggs style taste!

    Hope that is useful!

  • Hi! I hope you can give me some inspiration! I fancy making some pasties to freeze and/or take to work for my packed lunch. Even though I am a meat-eater, I am trying to cut down a little.

I have lots of frozen veg: cauliflower, sweetcorn, carrots, cabbage, spinach, brussels sprouts, etc. as well as vegetarian sausage / burger / nut loaf / "chicken" mixes from asda...

I have dried chillis, tomato puree, herbs, stock cubes, garlic, red lentils, dried chick peas, dried kidney beans, barley, coconut cream block amongst other things.

Can anyone give me any inspiration, please???

I like wholemeal pasties with red lentil, onion and chopped suede/turnip/carrot.

I mix white sr flour with wholemeal plain flour to make the pastry a bit lighter. (I haven't made it for a while though...)

Keep the lentils thick and reasonably dryish as they're cooking and add water as needed so it doesn't end up to wet to put in the pastry. I add the steamed veg at the end so it doesn't go mushy.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • sounds delish! do you use any herbs or spices in that?

I made some pasties a couple of weeks ago filled with lentils in a thick tomato sauce which were really lovely and are firmly on my 'to make again' list. I added some cheese to one of them and that was good, too, although better hot than cold.

Another idea I rather fancied was a suggestion from someone on another thread of using leftover veg curry in a pasty. I've yet to try it but will definitely be doing so next time I'm in pasty-making mode. :)
Back after a very long break!

    veggie sauage and beans
veggie chicken mix and mushroom or leek or sweetcorn in a white sauce
