Battery not being recognised ...

hi,

I have a problem with my battery for my laptop... I have "attempted" to speak to Dell about it on the internet but the call person's english was terrible. The problem seems to be that the laptop is not recognising the battery - each time it disconnects it immediately switches the laptop off, the start-up is not right and there is always a orange light flashing. I'm not sure that he has actioned things right ...

The call agent has arranged for an engineer to come out and replace the motherboard and possibly the battery which they say is out of warrenty so I would have to pay for it. How much is this likely to be?

Thanks for any advice,

Jen

As Bookduck says, that will depend on the model, but be prepared to be shocked.

I needed a replacement a few years ago (flashing orange/red charge status light) and it was £80 - which was Ok as the company I worked for paid.

You'll probably pay a third of that on Ebay, but the quality of the cells may not be quite as good as an original.
  • my laptop is a Inspiron 1501 ... does the battery serial no. matter?

They said on the phone that we should wait and find out if its needed but then they will give me the opportunity to purchase one ... sounds like a bit of trickery to get me to pay top price for one directly from them.

I'm sure that I remember reading that there is a counter on some Dells' that will not allow the battery to charge after a certain amount of recharge cycles, try Googling.

£80 on Amazon, about £30 on eBay for generic ones, or £50 for "original" ones.

  • hey,

Well this is actually the 2nd battery I have had ... I originally got the laptop last May/June and earlier this year the battery stopped charging all the time - sometimes it would but if you moved it, it would stop. They replaced it without an arguement ... and then this last month or so ... it suddenly stopped being recognised and flashing started to occur ...

I'm sure I paid for something extra when I bought it so I am going to check my agreement ... unfortunately I've just moved and all my paperwork is at my parents so it will have to wait........

  • hi,

The dell engineer came to my house yesterday and he said it was the motherboard causing the problem... He also gave me another battery although the one I had now works ...

I'm so glad that its sorted!!
