Open Office problems.....

Hello all.

I've recently downloaded Open Office to my laptop and I've got a problem or two. I'm applying for jobs at the moment but when I attach my cv (stored in OO ) to emails, the recipients can't open it unless it's a Word document. I'm then left having to cut and paste my details into the body of the email which quite frankly looks a bit amateur. Am I doing something wrong or should I just breathe deeply and buy a copy of MS Word?

FWIW, the Word that's instaled on my laptop was a trial version and is now "locked out" so I can't even get to the copy of my cv that's in it

Thanks in advance.

Martyn.

How are you saving these documents. I don't use Office but when you save your CV, do you not have a choice of file types to save the document? i.e. .doc

By default Open Office saves files that you create from scratch in its own format, with a .odt file extension.

If you open one of these files and then choose File, Save As, you can get it saved in a format that MS Word will read just fine. Probably the best format to choose is Word 6.0, as IIRC that's what most recent versions read ok.

The fact that you can't start the trial version of Word should not prevent you from opening and editing it in OO - and saving the result in Word-compatible format.
  • Thanks all.

I had no idea that Open Office had a default setting. Not being very computer-wise, I just assumed that it stored it as a Word file

I've just tried again having saved it in Word 6.0 and it's worked :j

    Thanks again :T :T :T
