Sorry, I work in payroll and I have never seen C on the end before.
I suggest that you call HMRC (have your NI number ready). They will be able to tell exactly why that is.

You need to speak to your payroll dept to find out what the C means for certain but one possibility is that it refers to the code being on a cumulative basis. If you had started the tax year on a code taking less tax than K516 then the code of K516 was applied on a week1/month1 basis your tax would have gone up, if that code was then changed to a cumulative basis extra tax would be deducted as being owed from the start of the year. K codes should never take more than half your pay as tax so if half your pay has gone this month then proberbly it will take extra next time as well.
Of course this is only a guess and I could only tell for sure if you can give details of pay tax and tax codes from each pay slip.
  • I had a coding notice that said I had £4k of taxable benfits from my company. Turns out the £4k were allowable expenses (hotel bills and such) that should have been removed. Then I got a letter saying that my limited company had paid £874,000,000 (yes, £874 Million!!) in income tax and I received a refund for £1K in overpaid taxes. Then I got a check for £150 incentive for sumbmitting accounts online from about 2 years ago.

The whole tax system is falling apart and I lay the blame squarely at Browns stupid tax credits. So blimmin time consuming to administer, drowning in fraudulent claims and a sponge soaking up the Revenue's time and resources.

I even got a letter about those demanding £200 back cos I'd been overpaid. Unbelievable!
