Warning re Driving Licences expiring

Picked up a comment on Yahoo news about this summer being the 10 year anniversary of the first photo driving licences. Apparently what few people (myself included) realise is that unlike the old paper ones which were valid until you are 70, the photo cards expire after 10 years and have to be renewed. If not you can be done for failing to have a valid licence and be fined £1000 (although apparently insurers are not going to invalidate insurance on the same grounds).

If you had one of these early on it might be worth checking the date (don't be confused there are two dates - one when the card expires (the ten year one) and one when you are no longer able to drive (the old 70th birthday one) - you have to look at the back to decode the dates on the front.

They are going to start sending out reminders but apparently weren't doing this initially so there are a good number not renewed. Might be worth checking and making a note of the date you need to do yours.
