i was wondering if any one knew if apprentices get a discount on council tax??? or does it depend on council to council??

Comments

  • An apprentice who is 18 or over counts as an adult for calculation of council tax, one who is less than 18 doesn't.

There is no individual policy on apprentices - the relevant legislation covers England and Wales. For apprentices there is no upper age limit, for a disregard under a YT scheme the age is 25.

To qualify as an apprentice you must
    Apprentices
Apprentices are disregarded for the purposes of a discount providing they are:
    • employed for the purposes of learning a trade, business, profession, office, employment or vocation
    • undertaking a programme of training leading to an accredited qualification
    • receiving a salary or allowance (or both) which, in total are substantially less than the salary likely to be received if the qualification in question were obtained and no more than £195 per week before any deductions for tax or national insurance.
    National traineeship trainees
People under 25 years of age and receiving training in line with an individual training plan under this scheme are also disregarded for the purposes of a discount . Individual training plans issued by the training provider and showing the course start and end dates is evidence of trainee status.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thank you, that's new to me.
