Energy Switch Problems

At the end of July I signed up with Energyhelpline to switch to British Gas for a duel-fuel fixed rate deal, paying quarterly when billed. Seemed pretty good as I would also get £15 cashback, or so I thought.
A few weeks later I get a welcome letter from British Gas but stating that I had agreed to quarterly billing on gas and monthly direct debit on electricity.
I e-mailed British Gas to explain a mistake had been made but they insisted that I had signed up to a direct debit on electricity.
I then got back to Energyhelpline who informed me that British gas must have cancelled my contract with them, and set it up direct. They also informed me that because this had happened I would not get my £15 cashback.
How can any of this be legal.
