Purchase stolen - card company not interested!

Hi,
Came back yesterday from the states to find that a rather expensive watch I bought as a present for my husband had been stolen from my baggage (please no lectures on why I should've put it in my carry on)
Anyway, I bought the watch with my RBS gold visa thinking it would be insured against loss for 90 days but having called them they say it's not covered and cannot/will not reimburse - telling me it was 'rediculous' of me to expect them to cover everything!!!
Anybody know of my best course of action now?
My travel insurance (free with bank account) will only pay out <£300 which is nowhere near the cost of the watch (embarrassingly:o ).
I've already filed a police report with the Orlando police too.
All help greatly appreciated
Thanks

I don't understand your comments about RBS. However, maybe consider a claim on your household insurance.
An Amex card would have covered you this."Brevity is the soul of wit and it is also the essence of effective communication" Rush Limbaugh.0 -
Egg offer 'In-Transit Purchase Protection' with purchases made using their cards, so I presume this is the kind of thing you thought RBS provided too?
Having taken a look on their website I can't see any reference to any similar kind of cover with the RBS Gold credit card. Their customer service advisors may not even be aware that other card companies offer protection against such things which may explain their 'rediculous' comment.
As Cranston suggested, it may be worth having a look to see if your household insurance would cover it.0 -
How did you file a police report to the Florida police when you assumingly had come home before you found the watch was stolen?0

Let’s hope, you did attempt to declare the watch to HM Customs and Excise on entry into the UK (and before you discovered the watch had gone), to have them calculate duty and VAT. The duty-free limit for purchases from outside the EU is £ 145.00.
If you tried to avoid the declaration such an expensive item (and if that is the reason why the watch was in your hold luggage and not on your person), you might be even in more trouble.
Travelling to the UK from outside the European Union (EU)
When travelling from a non-EU country (including the Canary Islands, the Channel islands and Gibraltar) you can bring the following into the UK for your own use without paying UK tax or duty:
200 cigarettes; or 100 cigarillos; or 50 cigars; or 250g of tobacco
60cc of perfume
2 litres of still table wine
250cc of eau de toilette
1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22 per cent volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine*, sparkling wine or other liqueurs *such as port or sherry and
£145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs.
If you have any more than these allowances you must declare the goods in the red channel or use the red point phone. If you do not, you are breaking the law and we may prosecute you.

I would have to say that the credit card company would ask for you to register the product with them or their insurance company to ensure you're covered.0

Believe it or not I was able to phone the Orlando PD from here in the UK (tut)
As for the comments on 'smuggling' THANKS FOR NOTHING! Do you realise it took more effort to point all that out to me than to just to say nothing if you couldn't help.
Cheers (bengal stripe) - and goodl uck sewing on all your boyscout badges!0 -

I agree, there was absolutely no need for Bengal-Strip to rub salt into the wounds. How immature and childish can one be. The OP now knows she/he made an error of judgement but was merely asking for assistance.Obviously 'Please be nice to all moneysavers' isn't in B-S's nature.
To Cwizard, I hope you are able to get the situation resolved satisfactorily. Good Luck. Sally0 -
There's no reason to be rude just because people aren't giving you the answer that you want.0

Let's make it clear then - you have absolutely no chance of getting any insurance policy to pay out.
You have lost your money.
I hope you don't think that is too rude for you.0 -

Mark of a good boyscout is to be prepared, at least he has the wherewithall to tell the time.....
I bought a Rolex in Singapore, the box went carry on and the watch was worn.
I am slightly at a loss as to why :-
a) someone would check in an expensive item
b) hope it was insured if it got lost.
You will find very few policies cover a high value item unless specifically insured, and in the case of a watch, unless it was removed as a result of a robbery with violence.
But there we go.0
