Ouch!! That was expensive.

Just took OH Fiat Panda in to local (small) garage. Warning light had come on saying engine failure but is was running fine so had checked oil and water etc last week.
He plugged into his diagnostic machine couldn't find a fault did a few checks and cleared the light, saying keep an eye on it all in under 10 minutes.
Now there was I thinking he would say "I'll catch you the next time" or call it a tenner but I thought £40 was bit eye watering as the standard charge for a quick diagnostic.
I'm obviously starting to lose touch with reality.

Makes the £60 diagnostic charge I was berated for last week seem almost reasonable...especially seeing as though he didnt find anything!

Can that be right? Yes it can - you're paying for his knowledge and expertise, he's providing a service, a main dealer would charge around £70
Yes I know, but coming from an area where everyone knows eberyone else and most small jobs like that used to be done with the customary "I'll get catch you next time" or "Your alright" it just starts to come as bit of a shock...lol
On saying that though I just arrived unannounced and he took it straight in so that was big plus point (we stood an chatted in the workshop whilst he did it) , no booking it in etc which of course if he had done that I wouldn't have a clue how long he worked on it.
I'm not really moaning just trying to get over the initial shock, from what my expectation was. C'est la vie.
It also puts into perspective some of the threads about the cost of servicing on here.0 -
For that sort of money you can buy a code reader that will also clear the code from the failure display.

Quite reasonable for the blokes time and use of his equipment, far too many expect to be told what the fault code means then clear orf and buy a new cts or maf or whatever and stick it in themselves0

Edit: I put some "smilies" on this, but they don't seem to want to appear !0 -
