Canned new potatoes - why can't I fry them??

Be careful if you microwave tinned potatoes - I did it once and they started to make banging noises (they were exploding!) - then silly me pressed the 'open door' button instead of the 'stop' button and got covered in hot exploding spuds - ouch!
I use them when we are camping to make 'camp stew' (and sometimes do this at home too, as an emergency standby) - basically tinned stewing steak, tinned spuds, tinned veg, all in together with a bit of extra gravy and heat - very quick and easy meal from my 'emergency' stores! The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

Hi OP,
My auntie uses these all the time for "saute pots".
The best way to get lovely sautes is to fry them in oil for about 5 minutes each side & then add a couple of knobs of real butter which then foams around the potatoes. Leave them foaming for about another 5 mins & then they're done. Apparently the knobs of butter are what give the pots a slughtly nutty taste.

I have to admit we always have a tin of these in the cupboard and when we have run out of pots or want a really quick tea, we use them. We ALWAYS fry them though as just boiled they don't taste as good.
I think the manufacturers are just erring on the safe side as the other posters have said, they DO spit a lot if you aren't careful and that could be dangerous.
Due to the spitting thing, we have always drained them and then dried them on a clean tea towel before cooking them. Have to say that sometimes, no matter how long you cook them for, they really don't crisp up, and other times they are fab, so not sure what that is about!!
They are a nice cheap addition to a meal though and great with a fried egg or a fried breakfast which we occasionally have as a main meal at dinner time!

Tinned potatoes make great potato salad, warmed slightly then chopped, add mayonnaise & chopped chives. Very easy!
We always used to have them on camping holidays, too.0 -

Whenever I have these, I drain them and dry them on kitchen roll first, but then they go into a Spanish Omelette or frittata. I've not had any problems with them.
FairyElephant and sweetserendipity, what fantastic ideas! We go camping at least once a year and I always rack my brains over things to take. I've made a note of that and am going to keep some in the cupboards, just in case. Thanks!

Tinned potatoes make wonderful Bombay potatoes.
I fry 1 large or equivalent onions, fry in a little oil.
Add curry powder to taste - I use tesco curry powder.
Put the potatoes, cut lengthways into quarters, in the pan and mix thoroughly.
Add a tin of tomatoes, chop the tomatoes up. Add some stock cube to taste and simmer until the juice is all gone.
