Canned new potatoes - why can't I fry them??

Hi all.
I have been given a large can of new potatoes. To be honest, they don't look particularly appealing, so I thought I would slice and fry them. However, the side of the tin says they are not suitable for frying. Why would that be? I'm sure I've got memories of my mum doing exactly that on camping holidays.... Will they just fall apart if I try? If they can't be fried, is there any reason why I can't roast them?
Thanks.

they say that because of the water content but i have fried them before when given a tin and they are still not appealling even when cooked this way
now if I'm ever given any I check the date and send them into dd's school for the christmas tombolaI didn't say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you

The only thing I can think of is that they are rather wet and the manufacturers don't want suing when you pour a can of potatoes, water and all into a frying pan and get splattered. We might be too dense to drain them first. That and the salt in the water might make them stick to the pan. Id rinse them and dry them well and go for it.
I was planning to fry up tinned potatoes next time we go camping. Let me know if it works.0 -

I have just bought a few cans of these potatoes for my storecupboard. I haven`t eaten these since the 70`s, but I did use them fried. Like others have said they because they are in liquid you do need to drain them well, even pat them dry on kitchen roll. I have actually put them in the chip pan and they used to be pretty good like that, or just as nice fried after you have cooked bacon. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0

I just drain them and fry them in butter, they brown better, but as others have mentioned they spit, so I cover them with a splatter guard when I do them.
