Been looking at FitchRating's website for the state of banks
http://www.fitchratings.com/corporate/ratings/issuer_content.cfm?issr_id=80361032&grp_typ_id=4&mm_id=§or_flag=3&marketsector=1&detail=
I know negative is not good but cant find any link on the site explaining what the different ratings mean. Anyone shed some light please. I'm interested in the 2 iceland banks 'Icesave' and 'Kaupthing Edge'

There is a table showing the different agencies rating levels about 1/2 way down the page.
In most cases Long Term Debt rated A is medium/strong Investment Grade.
The negative outlook, means just that.....
For Fitch they use F1+, F1, F2 & F3 then B,C and D for short term instruments....
F1 would rate as only slightly lower than the top grade which is mainly used for Government and SupraGovernmental debt, plus a few other ultra prime issuers.
