Help a girl in distress : What (not) to wear
Comments
-
Thank you everyone for your ideas and responses.
I know what you mean about letting her in to town with some money (and have done it previously), however the party (which is this evening) has gone from smart casual to posh over the last few days, and her friends all went yesterday whebn she couldn't make it as I was at work, and my OH was running the other kids (3 of them) on 8 errands. This has added to the tension, and also means I need to drive her - happy for her to shop alone but we have a time limit (and I know that doesn't help).
I plan to print out all the ideas received, and then talk to her about what looks good with my OH, and do for a quick shop.
Budget is around £40 but I would go a bit higher if I was convinced she would wear it again.
Would it be better for her mum to go, instead of me.I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

I think you should take her, and that you should reign in any negative comments that go along the lines of "you look like a three-quid hooker" or "that's too old for you".
I stopped going places with my dad because of the above sorts of comments. Tell her she looks lovely and steer her away from anything that's truly horrible.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

LOL my dad's reaction when he saw me in my wedding dress "you look...smart"0 -

she may be 7 years older than the OP's daughter but that doesn't mean anything. I am only 26 myself and still keep in touch with fashion etc. I have a sil who is 16 which is only 3 years younger, plus her sister is 12, children of 12 dress very much similar to children of 13. I really don't see where the issue is.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -

please ignore, wasn't what I meant to put at all0 -
Thanks Sugar
I will be enormously tactful (not too much of a change), my main job will be to help her from self-exploding under the conflict of dressing up - when normally she is a bit anti that sort of thing.
very much not a "plastic" to use the term she doesI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

I love this one a lot! I'm going to see if my local New Look has it and if I can fit in it! I know it's in the teen section but sometimes I can get away with childrens clothes!0 -
second hand dress shops often have good quality semi-formal stuff too:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
