I saw this and even thought of submitting a question - but thought better of it. The in-joke in our house about MB Live is that whenever anyone phones up with any form of investment question they are always told that the answer is they should consult a financial advisor - so that all investment discussion is in the realms of paid for advice. And the format is utterly predictable and pretty uninformative.

Back to the 'banking' phone-in ... you just know they are going to pull up anodyne 'tickbox' subjects - they've even provided a helpful list of the questions they want asked!

MB Live quite frankly needs the Martin Lewis treatment - where the presenter presses the 'experts' on their answers etc and callers are actually allowed to challenge what they are being told on occasion.

(Won't happen because the invited 'experts' won't submit to probing analysis will they?)

  • I put this in for the little good it will do, hopefully Adrian Coles will get some decent flak by members of DBS and CBS. Just my view of Nationwide lately.

"Regarding the Derbyshire and Cheshire merger with Nationwide, is the size that Nationwide is getting proving to bad for the Building society movement and wouldn't have been better to try and orchastrate a merger to create a 2nd or 3rd large national building society rather than have this behemoth which overshadows the others, and moves further away from the local principles of a building society.
Also the fact that members are obviously not being told the whole picture and are being denied a vote on whether they think a merger with Nationwide is the best course of action, is denying the mutual principle of ownership by members. It seems to being completed on the quiet, and the question is why? A range of options able to be voted on would be far better."
    Nothing to see here

It appears that Angela Knight CEO British Bankers' Association has sent along Brian Capon, Assistant Director, Media, British Bankers' Association for this programme.

'Assistant Director, Media' - Well, he should be able to make a better job of spinning the idea that the banks had absolutely nothing whatever to do with the credit crunch than she did on the radio the other day.

It just proves that they don't try to get well-informed independent outsiders to come on these types of programmes - just the ususal suspects (in terms of: inside-connections and level of knowledge)

There's even a term I've coined for these in-the-media-spokespeople types (who become highly identified with one particular organisation or 'cause' and then turn up somewhere completely new) it's called 'Sue Slipman Syndrome'
