Capitalone Classic pre-auth over limit experiences?

Hi

I have a Capital One Classic card with a £500 credit limit.

I am going travelling abroad, and of course hotels want a credit card for a deposit and they tend to pre-auth the cards with way more than you end up spending. I am planning to always pay cash - but will pre-auth pretty much always work even if you go above you limit. What are peoples experiences of going above their limit on capitalone? Do they stop the card even if you go over a £1 or is it more flexable?

  • When company's pre-auth your card for a certain amount, the card company gives an authorisation code and basically the company have a right to that money if they then go on to charge that amount. This will be taken off your available credit. This is their security so that if they despatch goods to you (if a mail order company) they are guaranteed that they will get that money.

If the card isn't charged the authorisation dies after so many days (14?). If the card is charged for a smaller amount than the authorisation it may leave the uncharged amount as allocated against your card until it dies as said above.

I could find out more about this unless someone else already knows.
