my brother is trying to resit the year.

My brother is at the university of hull Scarborough campus. He finished his 1 st year back in june which unfortunately he failed due to sever money problems which meant he was unable to afford the bus fair at one point to come into uni. He did not realise he could enter mitigating circumstances for the problems he faced over the year. He now wishes to resit the year, he was told to put in writing and send it to an email address he was give which he did and phoned to confirm it had been recieved. After a month he had still not heard back so he phoned his department who said they had to talk to his tutors to see if he was able to repeat and he would hear back in 2 weeks. 2 weeks go by still no response so he phones back, they say that they are having problems getting in touch with his tutors and gives him their phone numbers and emails. So he tries to phone and send emails 3 weeks later he has still had no response. He phoned his office today and they said he would have to wait another 2 weeks!! interesting as term is supposed to start very soon. I have told him to get in touch with the advice centre but apart from that what can he do to stop being fobbed off by people who clearly can not be bothered to do their jobs?

Go into uni, and speak with the tutor himself.

He lives over 120 miles from campus and his accommodation won't be ready to move into until the weekend before term commences.
  • he should get in touch with the student union as well as his student year rep, tutor, head of undergraduate affairs and head of department. an email copied into all of them just stating what has happened, asking why it is his responsiblity to contact the tutors, and explaining he is very nervous as the new term is rapidly approaching. if he can forward the original email with the date it was sent, that should help.

it is always difficult contacting staff over the summer as many go to conferences as well as on holiday, but this sounds ridiculous. i think it's time he emailled everyone in authority about it - someone will then have to do something!

Does he live far away? Would a trip to Hull to see the tutors be worthwhile?

I imagine he would have to show that (a) the reasons he failed the year and (b) that he has sorted the problems so that resitting the year won't be a waste of time.

If the reason he failed was mainly money problems, can he demonstrate that either he has better funding provision this year or that he can control his spending better.?

I live 120 miles away and Ive gone up many times. Stafford is uni. High Wycombe is home.

If he wants it sorted he will have to go up as it doesn't look like they're doing anything the other end does it?

As I said before he does live a big distance from the Scarborough campus where his department is based. In the email he had to send he told them the reason that he failed was mainly due to money and that his situation has vastly improved now, for a start he will be in £50 per week student housing rather than £100 per week pricey halls. He also didn't get a large grant he was entitled to from the university (which they phoned last week to say he was getting soon) which obviously affected his financial situation during term time. He didn't really spend any money on rubbish because after paying rent he didn't really have any money what so ever although his halls were catered so fortunately he did not starve.
We have both been on the web site to look for tutors in charge but as of yet have been unsuccessful however, he will persevere.
  • he should have a course booklet or guide that lists all the procedures. there should be a copy online on the intranet or something like that too. that will list all the names of the people he needs.

    which department is this?

You said one reason he failed was he couldn't afford the bus fare into uni.

How far are the halls from the uni? And if they are more than a walk away, don't the uni provide a bus, or if not, did they refuse to help with transport costs?

I'm not sure I understand why finances caused him to fail, not least because he was in catered halls, so was at least eating properly?

None of this is that important really, unless he is not being straight with people and they realise that - perhaps a reason he is not getting replies?

If he could not afford the bus to get to lectures then of course he may fail. His halls were a fair distance and as his course does not have placements he gets no help to get to uni.there were other reasons such as being home sick and getting very depressed due to his problems all of which he is able to prove should they ask. He is not getting replies because the tutors are not getting back in contact with the departmental office. Whether his excuses are good enough are neither here nor there they should respond in plenty of time with a decision one way or another, so if they say no he can utilise his right to appeal as set out in his students charter.
