bt line problem,

Hi All,

have been having trouble keeping my broadband connection when my house phone rings. i asked aol what the prob might be and they said it was the way my equipment had been set up (even though it's always been set up the same way!) anyway also changed my filters yet the problem still happens. i have bt dect phones.
i have since rang bt who did a line check and said there was a fault on the line so had to hang on for an advisor. call finally answered by some who first language was obviously not english and whom i had to ask numerous times to repeat what they'd said as i was having such trouble understanding them and the line their was end dreadfull, anyway, was asked to dismantle the phone socket and use the aditional socket inside to see if the problem still occured which it did. she then told me that she'd have to get an engineer round at a charge of £116 ! plus hourly rate if the fault was my end. i was absolutely gob smacked (i'm definately in the wrong business).
just wondering if as she's told me to use the other socket within the socket and i'm still having the problems whether fault would be internal or external. cos i sure as hell not giving them £116 and i'll just get hubby to change the socket box, and could someone clarify if it's bt's problem up to and including the phone socket?
many many thanks in advance for everyone help and advice

Can't do links - but look at my thread from 10/06/08 when I was told about the call-out charge.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

if you've used the test socket with the equipment set up in the wrong way or with faulty filters then it would still play up.....best thing to do is make sure everythings connected properly and that the filters are fine etc...can you hear noise or anything on the line when using the phone???? what line fault did they say you had when you reported this???? Broadband can drop when on the phone if the filters are faulty so thats a good place to start.. make sure you have no damp sockets or joints on the run internally and if all these seem fine and your happy the equipment is set up correctly and your filters are fine then the fault is external and you wont be charged..
  • The fact that there is a problem only when the phone rings indicates that there is a problem with the exchange equipment or line.
If BT say that there is a fault with the line then they should send an engineer to repair it.
Unplug all of your phones, use your modem in the test socket in the master socket, wait for the modem lights to go normal and then ring the number using a mobile. If the modem lose sync. then there is no problem with your wiring or phones.
    Hope this helps.
