Housing benefit whilst a student.

Long story really- but I will try to condense it!
I am a stay at home mum and my hubby is studying for a degree. The local council agreed we could claim housing/council tax benefit for the summer hol period only, new term starts 22 sept 08. In the interim hubby has started a part-time job (only 2 weeks ago) but will not get paid till end of sept. At what point would our housing benefit end? When he started the job or when he is paid? Have informed Tax Credit already of his employment, but not sure what to do about rent as we REALLY need the payment next week to meet the rent bill! THANKS. x

I am assuming that your income is too high for HB once your student loan/ grant etc is taken into account, so it will stop on the first day of term.
You have declared the income from the part time job, haven't you? xGone ... or have I?0 -
hi scrouge, if you aren't a student you should be able to receive housing benefit and council tax benefit for 52 weeks of the year if you are named as the claimant, depending of course on your income etc. It might be the case that your husband is currently named as the claimant which is why your LA is saying that your claim will need to end.0

I have no income at all but hubby gets loans/grants as a student but we have been told by LHA that we exceed the threshold for any assistance throughout the year. (UNTIL it comes to the summer holiday period only as technically your grant/loan does not support you for this period-but we do not claim ANY benefit during this time). The claim is in my name. Problem is we are not sure what hubbys take home pay will be as he works very few hours throughout termtime, then full time during school hols, so he is still awaiting his contract.
So does your Housing benefit end the day you start work or the day you get paid? What goes around... comes around...0 -
Hi Scrouge,
More enlightened people are on here but to my knowledge your HB stops the day your hubby starts works - he is earning money (even though you have not received it). You must declare the job, now. I believe any over payment can be reclaimed by the council. Is there any other help available via the Uni your hubby attends?0
