Apologies if this has been raised before - but haven't seen it.

I just got my price rise note from eon. What caught my eye was that the initial "high rate" units have risen far more than the lower rate units. Electricity 38% and 4.2%; Gas 43% and 22%.

I dug out my last bill and applied the new prices to it - a 22% increase in price!
I then pretended that I was years ahead of Gordon Clown and had 8 feet of glass fibre in my loft, the whole house was encased in 3ft of expanded polystyrene, I had octuple glazing and the curtains had 5 heavy duty linings behind them. By doing all this, my energy consumption was now half of what is actually was - I applied the new prices to my new energy/money saving energy useage and my increase was now - 29% !!!!!.
Taking this to its ludicrous extreme, had my energy useage been so low as to all be at the initial rate, my electricity bill would have risen by 38% and my gas by 43%.

Am I missing something here, or should this not be the other way round ?

No wonder the man from eon said they were going to make lots more money !!

Anybody want to buy some slightly used loft lagging ?

  • Companies with shareholders and fat cat board members will ALWAYS act in this way...if a weak, pathetic Govt allow them to do so. Time to re-nationalise the utlities, it really is. Don't worry about upsetting that cow Margaret Thatcher, she apparently doesn't even know Dennis is dead so I'm assuming she can't remember the terrible deeds she presided over all those years ago which are STILL affecting people now....

It's horses for courses. A number of threads here are berating the opposite situation with Npower - they have reduced their standing charges from £12 per month to £2 per month so presumably a lot cheaper the less you use - many low users have seen their costs halved or less. Perhaps you should switch to Npower*?

Your council would fine you two grand for octuple glazing- something about them not being able to see inside properly...

Very bad advice, especially for the gas, you should really read the gas tariff / cycle thread, and are of course being investigated by ofgem for such practices.
