Gas boiler and landlord question

People get confused with individual readings, but the OP has compared it to others, and it's 3 times what the others are!
We have the same system in our 2 bed flat (no water tank, but gas for central heating, hot water, and gas hob), and pay approximately £22 a month for our gas. We only turn central heating on around end November when it actually gets a bit nippy.
No, you think you have the same system.
Just because they have no tanks doesn't mean that your two systems are in the least bit similar.
Some combi's have a small store of water that is kept preheated by cyclic firing of the boiler so that there is less waste of water on startup, this will obviously use more gas.
Just because a reading is "3 times" what the neighbours are doesn't mean a thing, we are assuming that all the meters read the same when they were installed and many more factors. You need to read for example 3 meters at the beginning of the week and check again at the end of the week.
In any case call Transco and suggest that you feel you may have a leak, they will turn up as an emergency and stick a manometer on the supply which will show very quickly if there is a leak, and if there is, they will isolate the supply untl you repair it. A leak that resulted in such alledged high consumption should be stenching like anything and would only need a short time on the U tube to show a leak.
Don't mess about asking advice if you suspect a leak, call the gas board.0 -
I would be wary of turning the gas off unnecessarily. We had a meter change and the gas was turned off while it was done. The gas was only off for half an hour and the boiler was switched off at the time. When the supply was switched back on, the system was full of air and the engineers had to purge (?) the system.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hmmm, thanks for that, perhaps we could just turn the boiler off instead?
With regards to the meter readings, having spoken to neightbours they have all confirmed that their meter readings were very similar to ours when they moved in (just above zero). I have a feeling that some of the problems we are coming up against are to do with the fact that before conversion our flats were offices and ours was where all the utilities use to go to. Although the gas/electric meters may be new I am not sure all the piping and wiring was replaced for our flat as it was already in place from the offices whereas all the other flats needed to be supplied from scratch. I am pretty sure this is why we cannot find our water meter either - nor could the water company  . I have a feeling they may have utilised the old meter from the office for us and as such it is not in the same place as the new ones (have a feeling meter readings for this are going to be an issue too as not knowing where it is means we could not take a reading when we moved in). Sigh. Perhaps by the time the first six months of our contract are up we will have everything sorted. Its taken till now to get a council tax banding even though the flats had been completed for three months prior to us moving in. Am sure we have been doing a lot of the work the landlord should have done before anyone moved in.
Funnily enough no one could find our address as it was so new, yet withing three weeks of moving in we had a demand for a TV license - how do they do that!??0 -

Completely different to turning the gas off, if a meter is removed then the meter can be purged by undoing the pressure test nipple after fitting, in the event of the supply pipes being full of air, dependent on the length of pipe, if there is a gas hob, this can be used first to purge the air out before the boiler is used. If everything is left in circuit then no air will enter if you turn your own supply off.0
