car insurance - newbie questions

I'm thinking about getting a cheap second hand car and am looking at insurance quotes.

I'm F, 33, full license for over ten years, no points claims etc.

However, because I have not had my own car in the last ten years (been driving my parents or hire cars on rare occasions) my insurance quotes are very high.

Most companies are quoting me around £900. It's also high because of my postcode (I've compared it to my parents address which is only £260!)

My question is, is it legitimate to put down my dad as the main driver (who has 5+ years NCB) and me as a named driver. This would cost only around £400.

He owns the property where I live and it could therefore be argued this is his car for use at that secondary property.

Would this effect the insurance policy on cars registered at his primary address?

If I had an accident would it effect his NCB?

Any advice much appreciated.

  • Hi Trembling Turnip

This falls within the scope of fronting - putting a lower risk driver down as the main driver in order to lower the premiums. You would be the owner and main driver of the car and therefore the policy must reflect that situation.

    I hope this helps

No it is not legitimate. It's a very expensive but worthless piece of paper if you go down this route.

And in any case NCB can only be used on 1 car at a time ;)
  • Ah ok, of course I forgot that the car documents would need to have the name of the owner of the vehicle on.

My dad worked for Eagle Star insurance for 25 years (now retired) so I won't bother getting a clip round the ear for mentioning this idea to him then, haha.

Well, it looks like it's back to the bus for me. The car is only £250 quid but there is no way I can afford the insurance at that price for my postcode.
