Home Insurance with rented room

Hello!
At the moment I rent a room in my house to a teacher, and we are at the moment with Halifax, the renewal letter came with a huge increase in the price, does anyone knows any other company that cover household with a lodger. I am grateful for any info.

  • LTSB offer something, but there is likely to be a clause that says theft has to be accompanied by forcible and violent means of entry to or exit from the building. Essentially, this means that if the teacher knicks your stuff, you are not insured.

Just to cover myself, I don't work for LTSB or any company that they are associated with.

Norwich Union do aswell - that's why I'm with them. Go via cashbackkings too and you get £70 cashback if you take out buildings and contents insurance
  • sec79 are there any implications to using the cashbackings site?

  • ok so i rang norwich union this morning and got a policy sorted for 25 a month, the same theft restrictions apply and the lodgers personal possessions are not covered but accidental damage by the lodger is.

then called endsleigh and they do the lodgers personal possession cover for 78 for the year. so the only question i have now is do i pay for the lodgers cover or do i offer half towards it or get them to pay for their own?!

  • I might be better posting this on the NI forums but does anyone know any insurers who will insure with a lodger in Northern Ireland?

I'm currently with Endsleigh but yet to receive a renewal quote even though it expires in a few weeks. I know Norwich Union won't cover NI, I might try a few local firms - I hope I'm not restricted to just one company.
