I buy a lot of stuff on ebay and usually pay by cheque if not enough cash in my paypal account. I expect to have to wait until the cheque is cleared before my item is sent to me. Never had any problems. Wonder if I'm your buyer as just sent a few cheques off - one for a xboxgame and the other for a disney video both about that price but not sure of exact amount - you never know, lol!

Admitedtly I have had 1 impatient buyer who negged me on ebay as it took a month for her to get the item, but what she failed to put on the feedback was that it took her over 2 weeks to send the cheque. I had to bite my tongue over that one and just move on....

I would look at the buyer and make a decision from that, if they clearly buy a lot on ebay and the cheque is for a small amount (eg under £5) then I might send it earlier but if more then I prefer to let it clear first just in case.

Thanks everyone and no your not my buyer Ms pacman but you are always welcome!!! lol
  • I use the bankers draft cheques - at least i think thats what they are called, lol

The ones where you go into your bank and say please make a cheque payable to blah blah blah.
I'm pretty sure those are guaranteed but don't hold me to it.

Her feedback is 100% on 180. She purchsed a very similar pair on 03/09 and received very good feedback from seller on 10/09 so guessing that was after cheque cleared as I received the cheque the next day after auction ended

For such a small amount and with good buyer feedback I'd be inclined to post. In fact, I've done just that today as to cancel cheques costs quite a few £££.

For newer ebayers or for cheques over £20 I wait for them to clear but I always email the buyer to inform them that its arrived and been paid in and that the item will be posted as soon as the cleard funds appear in my account.
Character is what you have left when you've lost everything you can lose.

Good point if you suspect that the buyer could be an out and out scammer. Although you can get cheques cancelled for free, as I did this when one went missing in the post, so not always a fool proof way.

What is the cheque were to simply bounce through the seller not having the funds? How much will the OP's bank charge?

The sensible/safest thing to do is wait anything else is a calculated gamble.

I only take paypal from confirmed addresses or uncrossed postal order now.

I have never posted a thing without waiting for the payment to clear.
  • In similar circumstances, i.e. buyers with excellent feedback, I've always posted items without waiting and never had a problem.

The only thing with waiting for small value cheques to clear especially if you sell a lot is the admin hassle of remembering to post it later and checking your bank statements. For small amounts I would just post it out, but only you can decide whether waiting is better.
