I think most rescues would want adequate fencing to keep the dog safe, though its often the small dogs that are the best escape artists. Its worth giving the greyhound group a call to discuss, a low prey drive hound maybe ok with lower fencing so they might be flexible on that rule. Alternatively you could perhaps visually raise the height of the fence by using trellis or that wire fencing.

My Greyhound cant even just a 3 foot style - if he can't squeeze underneath he has to be carried over which he finds very undignified - a dog that can be traced back to a dog owned by mad King George in the 1770's being carried over a style! Lurchers are different as they tend to have Collie as well as Sighthound in and can often jump very well..
Agree that you are doing to need decent fencing for any dog tho..

I would like to add a vote for rescue centres in general. I would say I've never had much luck with emailing these places - I tend to phone if I have a question or go on their open hours as then at least you can be seen to be genuine. I used to do dog walking at my local DT before I could get a dog and loved it! Then we got Dylan and he's a handful (ate the biggest spider I've ever seen the remnants of overnight....legs everywhere!!!) but I wouldn't swap him for the world.

I have cats - and a greyhound. The smallest (monster) cat regularly thwacks the Greyhound for sticking his long pointy nose into her business (no claws) and the Greyhound also copes fantastically with all her visiting feline friends in the garden; and she has lots of friends...

If you get a greyhound that hasn't/won't race - and there are quite a few of them - you have a great chance of training it to deal with cats and small dogs. My Grey regularly goes off-lead on the beach and utterly ignores dogs that aren't sight-hounds - apart from springer spaniels which he loves to zoom about with and trip over, I call it spaniel spinning - sorry springer spaniel owners; no one is perfect and Springer spaniel's have a lovely inquisitive attitude and such a low centre of gravity I'm sure it's irresistible.. He totally ignores JRT''s and other small dogs as being totally "beneath" him.. We did do training classes and that helped to socialise him masses as did a few books I read..

Yes some Greys will never live with cats but many dog owners encourage their dogs to chase cats/rabbits/etc and I don't!

If you don't want a Grey then I respect that but whatever dog you give a home to; please make sure you are prepared for the first few months/year of hard work. It pays off but it's horrid to see rescue dogs "bouncing" through no fault of their own. I had a Saluki puppy earlier this year and it was really really hard work - much harder than the 2yo greyhound when I got him; unfortunately it died and it feels like a total waste. Not getting another!

PLEASE-try the local dog pounds.There are organisations that rescue dogs from local pounds and find homes for them or you can go round the pounds yourself.These are desperately needy dogs quite literally on death row.It isn't pleasant and it's very harrowing but you will know that you have helped a dog from the very darkest of situations. There isn't anything 'wrong' with these dogs-they are the ones the local dog warden picks up,

I would say that you are better off if you have previous experience of dogs but the very best pounds do have staff that care enough to be able to tell you something about the dog. Rain Rescue is a network that works with the pounds, and there are organisations (principally in South Wales) that rescue ex-breeding dogs.

Please try the local pounds.

Some successful racers also live with cats/small furries, think it all depends on the dogs disposition. My greyhounds trained but never raced and i seriously doubt they'd ever safely live with cats but there fine with small dogs. The majority of greyhound rehoming groups cat test dogs to see which are likely to be trainable to live with cats etc.

There are all sorts of dogs in rescues to choose from so i'd research what kind of breeds/ dog descriptions meet the qualities your looking for and then your more likely to end up with a happy match.

Another vote for greyhounds here. I have 2, both from https://www.greyhoundgap.org and they are fabulous pets! Neither of them has ever tried to jump, aparently they can but just don't realise it Also they are total babies and won't risk anything that might make them hurt themselves at all :rotfl:

Greyhound gap puts the dogs in foster homes before rehoming so they can give you a very honest appraisal of their personality etc, and they have busy forums with loads of advice etc.
