"Recipe book for children"

  • I think its a great idea! My niece and nephew (10&6) stay with me at weekends from time to time, and cooking is one our favourite things to do- especially home made pizzas. My brother complained that he was being forced to make fairy cakes etc when they go home.

An unexpected side effect has been that my little bro (well 26) and his girlfriend are starting to cook from scratch! He proudly told me yesterday that he had made spag bol! He was amazed at the size of the portions compared to the ready meals that he usually scoffs!(being OS of course I suggested he adds some lentils next time and freezes half so he has his own ready meal;) )

So there can be kids re-educating parents, lets face it pester power can be very persuasive!

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before
  • I was telling my kids about this book today, they all thought it was a great idea! ds and dd1's school give out a booklet at the beginning of the year and the children vote on which things to cook, though to be honest they are pretty simple and quick dishes without too much cooking, they aren't bad, but there seem to be so many time constraints and the teacher isn't keen on them using the hob!

dd2's school cookery is a waste of time, I have suggested that she does her homework during the practical lessons as making Angel Delight is in my opinion a waste of time. It might well have been me who posted about the pizza making, wasn't making pizza at all, it was just spreading a jar of sauce and some pre grated cheese on a ready made base! Argh, why bother!

Thanks for that link - there are a few recipes that I want to use :o

I don`t like fussy complicated recipes. Not coz I can`t do them so much as the fact I get flustered over them.

I think it`s a good idea - the step kids like cooking but their mum seems to think a good healthy meal is chicken nuggets chips and spaghetti hoops - and seems to think that`s "cooking" too

So if it teaches them that good healthy food can be easy to make and you don`t need to get frozen stuff from a packet for an easy meal - then that`s good in my view. If they can then teach their mum - well that would be a bonus!

My immediate thought when I saw this on the news is when did they stop giving cooking lessons, to have to restart them. We did home economics and cooked a number of things like pizza (from scratch) pigs in blankets and mash, bread, cakes etc.

To be honest I have cooked/ baked with my gran and my mum from being small as have my kids.
DD1 when she was 3 decided she was making a cake herself, she had mixed flour, butter, sugar and 3 eggs (cleanly broken!) together in a bowl when I walked in. I used the mixer to mix it all up and she insisted we bake it and to my amazment it worked and made a reasonable cake rofl.

Told DS (10) about this and he was amazed that people needed to be taught to cook, he just thought everyone knew. He loves cooking and used to adore ready steady cook. I have let both DD1 and DS chop veggies under supervison and they boh love cookig and baking.

Mind you they both love eating, made OS brownie biscuits yesterday, made loads and expected to freeze some. No such luck DS ate 22! On top of 3 apples 3 slices of toast and 2 big glasses of milk (this was his supper he had a big tea first lol). DD1 wasn't far behind they love food :) But are like oh tall and thin with hollow legs lol.

Sorry for being off topic, but what is the recipe for this?
  • i think this is a really good idea, i am 26 now and of the generation that missed out on proper 'home economics' and had 'food technology' and it was pants!! i rememeber we studied yoghurt packaging as our project and had write off to yog companies for design ideas....

I had my children young and have been skint yet i taught myself to cook and always make sure the children have a varied diet

TBH it does make me mad when people use the excuse 'i cant afford to eat properly' etc as i have been there when OH was on jsa and we still all ate reasonably well, fair enough i used more frozen and tinned fruit and veg sometimes but there was still f&v available.

I will be teaching my children to cook and also find it hard to let go if my kitchen and let them make a mess but i will do it.
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
