"Recipe book for children"

  • Hi everyone, only heard about the cookbook here today, and think it is a very good idea. Young people need to learn how to cook, as once they leave home and fending for themselves, they will be in bother. As another poster said, so is budgeting. These are two very important skills to have. I feel they need to be taught both. It will hard enough for them out in the world without getting into difficulties over money and not looking after themselves dietwise.
Do a little kindness every day.;)
  • I think it sounds like a great idea - children SHOULD be taught to cook meals and most children actually enjoy doing it too. There are far worse things to throw money at than teaching children a skill that will come in handy when they are older.

Its a brilliant idea, far better than 99.9% of crud our government has churned out over the years. Their best idea to date....
  • Children should know how to cook 'real' food or we have the next generation of adults who can't cook - then their children can't, etc, etc. DD old junior school have just approached me (they know I cook alot) to run after school cookery classes for the kids. Cooking for an hour - but with no oven or hobs!! Think its a good idea but no sure how to tackle it?

I think this book is a brilliant idea, maybe if parents aren't teaching their children to cook, the children will go home and teach the parents how easily it can be done?
  • Nice sentiment
I soooo doubt it will work - its not enough to shove a book in a childs hand and expect them to start cooking especially if cooking doesnt already happen in their house.

this is a quick fix - which for those who really need input it wont really impact why dont they put Home economics back on the agenda along with budgeting/ money management?
:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j

Read the Press Release ;) The book isnt just gonna be shoved into their hands  It is to be used alongside compulsory practical cooking lessons in secondary schools. :T

It's not enough to shove a link in someone's hands...you've got to hold their hand while they try and work out what they're talking about, too ;)

I think its a great idea to include cookery in the school curriculum, and something OS'ers have long advocated. Now lets hope the government puts its money where its mouth is and properly finances the setting up of kitchens in schools/training of teachers.

I was a bit concerned to see in a comment (on how the govt will finance the scheme) that they've included a cost for microwaves which is fine but I hope they've included 'real' ovens too! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
