What obligations do Energy Suppliers have when they announce a price increase?

Do they have to tell each customer or just the media?

I am sure I only found out about Click Energy 4 increase two months after it happened and I don't want the same thing to happen with the Click Energy 5 increase.

why is it when they say prices will increase from (example )October ,but they bill you quarterly and your last bill was August ,so your next bill will be November .So The increase will be paid from your last bill which was August .
Surely they should increase prices after the next billing cycle .

The obligation of the Energy supplier is to inform you by letter within 65 working days(3 months) of the date of the price rise.

If you decide to leave the company because of the rise, you have 10 working days to tell them and then you will be charged at the pre-increase prices until you leave.

So late notification works in your favour.

As the BG Click accounts are internet only accounts, I assume your notification will come by email.
  • Nope, anything to do with price increases etc. come by letter as they are more likely to get to customers. Emails can be seen by other people, have email addresses that are incorrect so posting important, legally required, information like price increases or direct debit details etc. are always done by post.

But, you're right, they notify the media first and then should send letters out to customers within so long of the effective date.

It looks like they only have to notify the media and not each customer.

I have just found this from Eon where they announce the increase on 21st August 2008 effective from 22 August 2008. Doesn't give you much time to change suppliers if you don't like the new price does it?

Well if you don't want to switch you have lost nothing and gained nothing.

However if you do decide to switch you can get up to 4 months at the old pre-increase price(should they delay the letter of notification.) - so you will gain.

You could even move away and then back to your original supplier.

I believe they must notify you individually. Don't forget that for a rise effective on 22 Aug, they have until late November to notify you!
