  • Andy L - I agree the license is not held by me and I didn't intend to suggest it was so sorry if that came across.

My issue was as to the best route forward from my personal point of view as far as a purchase in light of insurance not covering the cost to put it onto the new machine.

    Thanks

  • As you're a teacher, please do try OpenOffice.org and see if you like it, and if so, please tell others.

I'm an advocate of Free and Open Source software, and also a Tax Payer, so I'm promoting such software in schools, so that they can spend their money on other things. The Microsoft Office vs. OpenOffice.org is a common discussion, but I do believe that there is no feature in MS Office that is an essential for schoolwork and/or doesn't have an equivalent feature in OpenOffice.org.

The use of MS Office at school encourages families to also have it at home, and despite the reduction MS gives for academic users, 20pounds is still too much for a lot of families. I am preparing an old office computer to give to someone in my local high school. I will be putting OpenOffice.org on it.

And there's no concern any more about having at some point to use a computer that does not have OpenOffice.org installed on it - there's a portable version of OpenOffice.org that you can run off a USB key (http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable). All school pupils have a USB key these days don't they?

Anyway, please consider OpenOffice.org, and Free software in general:

Please use OpenDocument (ISO 26300) format (.odt - .ods - .odp - .odg) for attachments
  • Many thanks for the speedy responses and great info.
