post office mistake over currency

OP - I don't think you can rely on the disclaimer (mistakes cannot be rectified... etc) in this case.
If the opposite had happened, you could have used your receipt as proof of their error and had the mistake rectified. The exchange rate they used can be checked against the correct rate for that day, so there would be black-and-white proof in your favour.
Your issue is the other way round; even without your receipt, the PO have proof that they used the wrong exchange rate and paid you too much. They also have your address. Also, if they recorded your phone call, they might have a record of you saying that you knew they'd made an error.
I think they have a pretty strong case, but I'd wait and see what their next move is and maybe offer to split the difference.0 -
Just an update, went back to post office and asked how they had got hold of my address ( as we only took passport in they shouldn't have my address) and they stated 'used the phone book', i explained that I would be seeking advice from the citizens advice and via work I get free legal help as I wanted to be sure had the incident occured the other way I would be treated the same. the manager said she would call me the next week to arrange a re payment plan, she called back but said that as a goodwill gesture the matter had been dealt with and we didn't need to return the money:j0
