If you are in a cabled area, then obviously Virgin cable is a good idea, as it's all fibre and potentially much faster than ADSL.

If you can only get ADSL (via the phoneline), I'd echo fatnbald's advice, a quality ISP makes all the difference. Zen are fantastic, I get excellent speed and service from them. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Just check you distance from the exchange first, I don't know anyone who gets 8Mbps. Note it's megabits per second, not megabytes, often confused when people say "8 Meg".

you cant get 8mb if the line wont support it, no matter which isp you use.
you really need to move to cable to get really high speed.
my son gets a genuine 16mb on his sky cable connection.

i cannot get more than 4mb on my bt line. (bt says 8mb. no one here believes them).

Sky Max (up to 16Mb) is provided over a BT line using Sky LLU and ADSL2, not cable. Details here
