My son is still waiting for a response from Natwest - but I shall report back in due course.
Good news for your soon then.
By the way, the banks will NEVER (unless forced to do so like a kicking child) show the breakdown of the £28 charge as there is no substance behind it.
It would appear that someone picked the number out of thin air to charge people, hence the test case going through the courts which more than likely will come back and say that the fees are ok to continue with but at a lower rate like with credit cards, leading to mass payouts by the bank hopefully in 2009 :beer:0 -

In their letter they have said -
"The bank considers its charges to be fair, reasonable and transparent. Having reviewed your account, the charges debited have been applied correctly and in accordance with our published tariff. However, on this occasion as a gesture of goodwill, we have arranged a refund of £28 to your account. We have also arranged to waive any related unauthorised borrowing fees (there were MORE??). Please note that all charges taken correctly in the future will stand."
Well, it was certainly worth writing. So hopefully this may help someone else in the same position.
*
Hi Lotto-dreamer - can I ask what you wrote in your initial letter? My bf has been charged twice for going over once due to 3.41 interest charge (see my previous post for full details!)0 -

Hi Loz1984
This is the -wording of the body of letter to Natwest which was addressed to Customer Relations Manager, NatWest, FREEPOST NAT 12685, borehamwood WD6 1BR)
I have received a pre-advice note from you regarding a ‘maintenance charge’. I was not aware what this was and had to go to my local branch to query it.
I was told that because I had gone 43 pence overdrawn Natwest is charging me £28 and this is to be taken from my account on 30th September 2008.
As I am a student and work part time the sum of £28 seems a very harsh penalty for being inadvertently overdrawn by 43 pence.
I am writing to ask you to please reconsider your charge in this instance. I will ensure that this does not occur again.
It sounds like your bf's charge was very unfair - if it was a 'first offence' I'd definitely emphasise this point (see Lokolo's advice at post #2 above thanks Lokolo and genieuk!)
Good luck.0
