I'm totally confused by these things. Will 80gb be enough for ordinary usage or should I splash out on more. And which make do I want? Panasonic and Sony look good but are expensive. Is it worth looking at other makes like Philips and Lite-on which seem to be about 70% of the price? Any hints much appreciated.

I've just splashed out today on the liteon 5045 (160 gb) which I've bought from currys with 5% egg cashback and a £20 discount found on the discount vouchers board (had to add batteries to take my order over £250) - net cost £227. You can get it from ebuyer for £235 to include 25 dvd-r discs. The same machine with 80gb is about £40 cheaper, so figured it was worth paying that to double the memory.
There are a lot of positive reviews on ebuyer and also if you search this site for liteon, there are a lot of good things said about them. I certainly didn't feel it was worth paying extra for a name.0 -
it really depends on what you want from your dvd recorder, i personally would go with any one which had a hard drive of 40 gig or more and played svcd/vcd and mp3 at least. but do you want a hdtv compatible one? does it matter to you if it has this function?
hdtv in 5 years will be where digital tv is now, 40 % or more people will have it who use sky digital now. but 5 years is a long time for most electrical products nowdays.
if you do 'need' hdtv connections then this one seems a nice one.
