As the OP, I don't think the issue is whether or not these, or any other items should be subsidised by the government. Let's not forget Asda has managed to bring in a vital item of clothing for any post-mastectomy woman and done it for less than the price of a prescription, while still giving money to two very worthy and appropriate charities. For once the issue of who gets what from the NHS is, and should be, irrelevant.

I've been buying these for a year or so now. They are great value for money. Just wish they would do something a bit more lacey iyswim.
I didnt have reconstruction and find it disgusting that you are issued with one prosthesis then its down to you when it needs replacing. I do think that the companies who sell these and post surgery bras 'hold us to ransom' and we have no choice but to pay their prices.

BTW Marks & Spencer also do post surgery bras, but don't do bigger sizes.

Liverbird, did you know that you're allowed a new prosthesis on the NHS every 3 years (or sooner if it's damaged). I just contact the breast care nurses at my local hospital and they fix me up, no questions asked.
  • I also had a lumpectomy for breast cancer which has left me with odd boobs. Sometimes I wear a 'chicken fillet' if my top is close fitting and I have found that Sloggi bras are the most comfortable and soft. I have recently bought one which has no fastener, it just pops over the head, It is great. Sorry, I can't remember the model but I bought it from figleaves....

Good luck with the op pixiebum..... you'll be fine.
  • I have had a mastectomy and reconstrucive surgery and wear these post op bra's. I was surprised to find that although they are not subsidised you don't pay VAT on them. When I take them to the counter at M+S I fill in a form and have the VAT refunded. My M+S ones were £14 each less the VAT and I thought that was reasonable, not much different to regular M+S prices.
But I will definitely check out the Asda ones!! Thanks for the tip.
Best of luck Pixiebum hope it all goes well. I have had three lumpectomies in the past and none of them made a difference to my little boobs so you may be alright. If you are worried you should ask your surgeon if he can put a small insert in to even out the size, they should be able to do that, especially at your age when image is such an issue. lots of luck.
  • I work in a shop specialising in mastectomy bras and swimwear. I have been trained to measure and fit bras etc where a prosthesis is needed.

Most ladies are wearing the wrong size bra.

Martin does a good job but we have ladies coming to us all the time that have bought the Asda bras and they don't fit, come apart very quickly etc etc.

Unfortunately sometimes we get what we pay for.

sorry to hijack this thread but how do you measure/ fit bras for odd boobs please?
  • Once we have got the back size right (bras are like shoes, you must try varying sizes to find your size in that bra) we then fit the cup size to the lasrgest size. The other cup can then be padded out.

I have had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, herceptin, tamoxifen, arimidex and a reconstruction. Due to all the treatment I have put on a dew pounds or more, so my remaining boob is now larger than the reconstruction, I therefore have to pad out the new one.
  • I have had a mastectomy and cant find these bras in the Asda in Nottingham. Does anyone know how I can find these please?
  • I bought one of these bra's dead comfy i had one for after my breast augmentation :)

pixie: i wish you all the best with your treatment so young.

Im a bra fitter also, we're everywhere arent we!! I would advise that you buy this bra, then get a good trained fitter to check the size of it, to make sure its correct, then you can hopefully exchange the bra for a better fit. I know it might be a bit of running around, but i dont see a better way of getting the
asda bra to fit right unless your 100% sure it is!

The amount of women who have had breast surgery is enourmous, and sadly the industry is letting these women down.
