Old laptop and installing Linux

Someone recommended DSL (Damn Small Linux) to me. 50MB. I've only just downloaded but it looks impressive... so far
Both DSL and Puppy Linux are great they run well off a CD/USB Flash Drive and install to the HDD easily. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Erm...my laptop is six years old, has a Celeron processor and is running XP.
Though to be fair, I can go up to 1 GB of SDRAM. I currently have 640 MB RAM fitted. Runs fine. Wasn't that good when it had only 128 MB RAM
Running a full suite of XP Professional with Office 2007. Not as fast as my PC, but no real issues considering the spec.
That said, don't let it stop you from trying something new.0 -
My vote is with puppy linux. I have a version of that installed on an old 1gb mp3 player and it boots my laptop and runs fine. I also have an old 860mb hard drivve in an external housing which runs it on the laptop.
Puppy is simple to use and fast on old computers.0 -
Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) is also worth trying. Release 5 has just come out.
