More eee pc questions...

I bought the 900 on the special offer from E-buyer. I want to connect wired broadband with it but talktalk like you to install software... Otherwise I can use the ethernet apparently but my modem has no cable for it. Do I need to buy another modem or is there something I can plug the USB that runs from my modem into that has a ethernet I can plug in the eee pc? (Sorry my vocabulary is awful at the mo'!). Or is there another way?
Also, is this version going to have a battery with problems, or do I need to check the specific battery and look it up somewhere?
Thanks for any info.

  • It is probably easier to get a modem with an ethernet (AKA RJ45) socket and then just get a connecting lead. The modems with a single ethernet as well as USB are pretty cheap to pick up these days especially if you are happy to have a second hand one, if you have a freecycle group in your region it is worth asking on there, there are quite a few offered in the region I am in as people upgrade their hardware with new ISP's etc.

As above, you could find a modem with ethernet as well as USB for less than a fiver. I don't know whether your 900 has Linux or Windows on it, but there are Linux drivers for loads of USB modems out there. If you're going to have to buy something, and you've got an eee (a tiny PC which is ultra portable, with WiFi) I really would recommend just getting a WiFi router. Make sure it does 'G' and ADSL2, and all you have to do is enter your TalkTalk username and password into it, then set up your WiFi network. There's no special modem for TalkTalk. I'm sure you could do this for £30. Seems a waste of the wee computer otherwise...
  • Its Linux OS. I don't know where to get a secondhand modem from...? Would love to sort this for a fiver (and today!!). I want wired at home, it'll get some wireless when I'm out. I don't know how to go about finding a linux driver so I can use the modem I have- gonna take a look, but can anyone point me in the right direction? (Then of course I'll have to take thing out somewhere with a decent connection I suppose).

First thing I would do would be to ask around your friends then. Often when you sign up/change provider you get a modem free (or buy a wireless one). People who already have wireless will have the wee wired modem spare, and if you get really lucky, someone will have one with ethernet sitting around. I would've suggested eBay, but that won't get you it today.
  • 'Today' was just me being impatient! eBay is a good idea, I have tried asking people- no luck so far but still trying...
