The Acer Aspire 7720 is great, good ram, good graphics (you won't be able to play the latest games on full graphics but they will work), and a 17" screen which is usefull if you are all using it as a family computer. It comes in different versions including more ram, more graphics memory and bigger hard drive but a decent spec version and also very cheap can be found at http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139032 (399 is cheeeap!)
or you could get the G version (games) with dedicated graphics memory (which is better for games or running imaging/video programmes) for £449.97 down from £659.97 (saving £210 ) from http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_7720G-5A2G16Mi_LX.ALN0X.488/version.asp?refsource=ldfroogle
hope that helps. I use the 5920g which is a smaller screen but I have a higher spec version and it was around £600 but i use it for video editing and photography editing and it works a treat even when using Premier pro and Photoshop CS3 together! this is mainly due to having high ram and a dedicated graphics card.
hope this helps a little.
The only thing i would say is that the keyboard and mouse aren't great so i plug in a keyboard and mouse and don't touch the laptop which is actually a lot more comfortable anyway.Skint :money:0
