We had 1 call made to 123 on our bill recently but I've now barred this number on the Orchid Dialler after finding out the cost (it added almost 10% to our call costs!).

Standard call barring may do the trick, using the *344# code which blocks operator calls.

123 is not one of the numbers that can never be barred.

Caller Display phones update the time from the data received from incoming calls.

Sky boxes DON'T call 123 either to update their time. Their time comes from the clock that is broadcast on each transponder.

I wonder where people get such rubbish from? Like people who say Sky boxes use the phone line to update the EPG etc, when that comes over the satellite too!
