How do I find out which programmes strat when my computer does

I have a computer which takes forever to get going after switching it on, is there a good "start delay" programme which will tell me which programmes start with the computer and allow me to stagger them a bit.

Thanks.......

Can highly recommend the free WinPatrol which will let you disable startup items or move them to "delayed startup" where you can set how long to wait before starting each one - works great on my PC and lets you get to work faster when starting up your PC in the morning.

  • Without having to install yet more software, you can do the same thing manually. Click on START>RUN and in the box which appears, type 'msconfig'. Click OK.

If you click on the startup tab, it will allow you to see all the programs which run at startup. If you're a novice, I suggest you find out which program is which before disabling any, as there are programs listed there which may need to run at startup.
  • bingo bango is correct but a little easier to use maybe, is the startup control panel in spybot S&D if you have that free program running already? You need to select advanced user in options I think and look in the start up options and just untick the ones you want to stop, you can reverse the actions there as well.
  • this link http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/index.php?file=hkcmd&do=file was posted on here a couple of years ago, if you do what bingo bango says then type each item into this programme it lets you know if it is needed on start up

The easiest way to check/remove the startup items is via the registry. The following keys are the ones of relevance:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I usually create a shortcuts to the items that I remove in case I ever want to restore them.

I can't remember off the top of my head if there's an easy way to delay startup items, though...

CCleaner not only does a great job of cleaning the rubbish from your PC; it'll also allow you to see and change the startup programs. Google for the latest version.
    Super geek.
