Lpc

Hi,

I am a third year law student and currently looking into funding the Legal Practice Certificate. The problem is that it costs £6900 not to mention funding costs of living during that year! I have looked into funding from the LA but they don't seem to do any, the other options are Career Development loans etc but there is a problem because I am bankrupt!

I was just wondering how other people had managed to fund it and how they also managed the costs of living for that year? I am a single mother so its really hard managing at the moment, I almost beginning to wish I had never started this degree and just gone and got a normal job.

The other thing is I am supposed to have started applying for training contracts but I am not sure how it works?

Do you do the LPC first and then the training contract, if so how does that work because most of the Training contracts I am looking at start in 2009?

I am really confused and worried about it all now so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Have you discussed all this with the Careers department at your university? That's what they're there for.

Edit; I think the above came out wrongly. There's nothing wrong with asking on here but you have the services of experts available to you as well.

Have you checked wth the law society that being bankrupt won't effect your eligibility to practice?

I believe that each case is looked at on an individual basis but it's certainly something that needs to be taken into consideration.

Not sure about the funding issue but yes you usually do the LPC then go into a training contract (if you can get one, they are like rocking horse poo).

A part time job would help you get through for your living expenses and you will be topped up by working tax credits and child tax credits.

Why dont you speak to the Student Services at your uni, other people must have been in this situation before and they will know how they managed.

    Good Luck!

    Found this:

"Becoming bankrupt will not necessarily prevent you from becoming a solicitor. When you enrol as a student member of the Law Society you must disclose any County Court Judgments and bankruptcy orders. You will also be required to supply two references. At least one of these individuals must be aware of the bankruptcy and be able to comment on it. They must also have known you for a significant period of time prior to the bankruptcy occurring. Once the student enrolment form is received by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) they'll decide whether to grant you student enrolment. The SRA may ask an adjudicator to interview you so that questions can be asked about your situation. Each case is decided on an individual basis depending on the facts in question."
