you expect the government to allow discounts on taxes,:rotfl: this is the U.K. we don't do discounts, just increases.

I get discount on my council tax for living alone, working families get tax credits - why not ???????

Thanks to those who posted useful information for me. Sadly, I dont happen to have a few spare grand lying around to buy a lower bracket/more economic car - if I did have, then the £185 for the car tax wouldnt be an issue !

Whatever you do, don't buy the Post Office savings stamps. This just like saving it in a buliding society savings account, except that someone else, the govt, gets the interest.

How does buying the stamps cost more ?

From what I can see - each stamp costs £5.00, and is £5.00 towards your tax.

Surely, this is not costing anything

But surely its better to budget, than to be faced with a bill you dont have the money to pay ?

It doesnt actually cost anything to save the money in jars or stamps !
  • my VED was 185 this year,it went up by around 10 quid from last year so i dont see why you were faced with such a huge unexpected bill.
surely you knew your VED would be due at the same time next year?

keep money aside in a savings account for things for the car, insurance,MOT,tyres, servicing, VED. then theres no shock. and you accumulate interest on the miney rather than it just sitting there in stamp form.
    ...work permit granted!
  • To be fair, I didnt say that it was a shock - I said that it was unexpected as the amount has actually gone up a great deal since last year - not just the £10 that your's went up by.

Welcome to the Gordon Brown tax & spend regime. Luckily for you, your car won't be so affected in the 2009 tax grab.
  • I didn't realise that some cars were hiked up this year, I thought it was all happening from 04/09?
    Anyone got any details handy?

They didn't, just the normal increase, it all happens next year.

If you find it difficult to budget, do what Goldspanners said and have a regular saver account (allowing withdrawals) total the following

    Years VED
    Years insurance
    MOT fee
An amout for annual service and MOT work

Divide it all by 12, and set that up as your monthly payment into the regular saver account.

BTW, if you paid £185 just now, surely that means you have a pre 2001 car above 1549cc and it rose by only £5 from last year. All the bands rose by £5 exxcept the low ones with no rise, and the highest band 'G' with a rise of £100 . If you have a band 'G' car I have no sympathy for you if you can't afford it, sell it.
