My parents have got them and they find that when they change the channel on the TV the lights go off!!

It is a good idea though :)

  • I have purchased four sets from Lidl over the past couple of years (they have had them on offer at least twice in that time).

One thing that I would like to correct is that they do not seem to have random codes. That is to say that the "1" button on one controler will generate the same code as the "1" button on the other controlers.

    RRB

Thinking about it you've solved a puzzle for me! My Lidl set only ever has a problem with the neighbours car with the one switch controlled by Lidl #1 OFF button (by chance the one between two windows at the front of the house). Relearning it seemed to make the problem go away for a while (whereas in reality they probably parked differently/aimed their remote differently).

I must have misread/misunderstood the manual about relearning. I'll now experiment with my #1 controlled socket being the one furthest from front/windows and hidden behind an extra wall.

Thanks for that tip off. I'll be intrigued to see how my friends ALDI set works now! The Italian friends (who paid 4 times the price for their controllers from a DIY store there) do DEFINITELY have a button to randomise the codes).

    Black...

Surely the set your parents have must be infra-red controlled set and not a radio controlled set ? The Aldi set are RADIO (as are my Lidl, and the Maplin mentioned above).

Infrared = line of sight. Radio = transmitter range (-obstacles to some degree).

If not then their TV must be emitting some strange signal as it retunes!

The Lidl radio set work perfectly behind a bookcase and behind a speaker and in among a complete rabbits warren of power cables to a dozen devices.

I'm off to buy a couple of sets, i'll be re-wiring them to the bedroom light sockets and the living room lights tho

It'll make a great practical joke on my old man, round my parents house i'll sit in the car park and turn stuff on and off a few times
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Just nipped to Aldi in Old Trafford, Manchester - none to be seen at all! And I really wanted some of these! We've got a Linksys ADSL router with built in modem that needs a daily reboot/boot in the backside, and this would be perfect for that.....

Read the thread carefully - I have already clarified this one.

If these are like the Lidl ones, then they have a button on the transmitter which causes it to pick a random code from a large selection..

Well thats about as clear as mud. These are the Aldi ones. not your Lidl ones, so its anyones guess.. :p

I can understand gromituk - these look a great idea but what practical use are they?

I must admit that was my first thought too. I guess if you're disabled in some way and find getting to the switch difficult then they may be of use, but I'm struggling to think of any other uses.
