Urgent Advice needed

Hi

Unfortunately, I was in a dire financial position last year and my pet insurance lapsed.

I need to get my dog to a vet today as he is unwell. IS there anyway I could sign up for insurance before making an appt and being covered? I was wondering if there was a service similatr to green flag where you can join on the spot?

No chance. There is usually a 2 week period after you start a policy before they will cover you. This is to stop insurance companies having to pay for pre-existing conditions (like your dogs). No-one will cover you for today. Sorry

Hi,

I am very sorry to hear your dog is unwell but unfortunately Snowman is right, I don't know of any insurance companys that will pay for a dog thats already unwell when the insurance starts. It would be classed as a pre-existing condition and therefore would not be covered.

Have you tried the PDSA, they might have a treatment centre near you or maybe the RSPCA? Or alternatively when my cat was ill I took him in and the vets let me pay when I had the money or they may let you pay a little bit at a time.

If you are in receipt of council tax benefit or housing benefit you can get up to £100 help from the PDSA even if you are not near one of their hospitals. I think the RSPCA needs income support. As for emergency treatment, we usually want 50% up front and the rest within 3 months. Does help if you are a regular client though and we know you are good for the money. Definitely a situation where it pays to build a good relationship with your vet

Thanks for all your helpful comments, in the end I didnt care about the cost. My Max lost his fight for life yesterday...we got to the vets and it was severe liver cancer with no hope of recovery. I brought him home and then me and hubby took him back for the dignified departure...it was dreadful, a cruel twist of fate took our lovely, gorgeous little boy at only 6 years old. The house feels like an empty shell and not a home.

I had to go through the same experience in March this year with my beloved dog,however she had had a good life at 15 years old.It is so tragic that yours was so young.However,illness has no respect for age,but you have made the right choice.Our pets rely on us to be there for them at all times,which means the hardest decision ever,but it is only fair for them to be out of their suffering ,leaving us to grieve instead.

I can look back now at all the good times and the love she gave us and soon you will be able to do the same.Just give yourself time,and take care.I feel for you.
