Not paid for Gas for 9 months!

We switched our electricity and gas over to Eon in January this year. Electricity went over no problem but we heard nothing about the gas. We phoned Eon and they said 'no problem, must have been a mix up somewhere, we will put it through again', Couple of weeks later...nothing.
Phoned Eon again, they said there was a problem with the meter. The meter our last supplier put in (changed from pre-pay to regular meter) didn't have the same number as was down for our address, but it was being sorted. Heard nothing more. We phoned again in May and were told it was all sorted and we should get a bill within a month.
Begining of July the meter reader knocks the door and tells me he cannot do a meter reading as the meter numbers don't tally. DH phones Eon, they say it is all sorted and we should get a bill in the next couple of weeks......we hear nothing. Phoned again in the middle of August, told it was all sorted and we should get a bill in a week or so....we have still heard nothing.
What on earth do I do now? We haven't paid a penny towards our gas use since January - almost 9 months. I am getting really worried about the bill now. I can't keep phoneing Eon and being told it is all sorted and to wait a week or two for the bill. Does anyone have any ideas of what we can do to try to get this sorted?

Someone who knows more about this will post, but I keep seeing references to a rule that says you can't be charged for more than a year if you haven't been billed. If this is the case, I would syphon money from my current account into a savings account in readiness for a bill and hope that it takes longer to sort out and I only ended up paying for a few months!0

If you really want it sorted - then write to them. Call centre staff are not interested in problems so phone calls are useless.
However as said above, if you don't get a bill you can only be back billed for 12 months and they will often reduce large outstanding bills a little and always give you a long period to pay back what you owe.
I really cannot understand why you are worried about not getting a bill. You can very easily work out roughly what you will owe and just put the money aside(it is not mandatory to spend it!)
You are in a win/win situation.0 -
I didn't know about the 12 month back billing rule. I can see that I could use it to my advantage, but I don't know if I would feel very comfortable with that, so probably wouldn't do so!
Cardew - I'm able to pay a large bill when it comes, I'm not a spend-spend all that's available kind of person! I've just always felt unhappy oweing money - it's how I was brought up to be - and so I worry if I owe anything!
Thanks for your help0 -
could be a bit of a ball ache if the OP decides to swap suppliers...0

Eek, I will have to grow them first! DH seems to like me being a girly!
I don't want to swap supplier in the next couple of years - I can't be bothered to hae to sort this sort of thing out if it happens again. The only problem I can see will be in around one and a half / two years time, when we would hope to move house.0
