• Electricity 4 Business goes into administration
23 October 2008

Tim Wolfenden, Head of Business Services at uSwitch.com, comments on the effects of small business energy provider Electricity 4 Business going into administration: "It's very disappointing to see a small energy provider like Electricity 4 Business (E4B) going out of business as these types of companies are crucial in driving competition in the small and medium enterprise (SME) market place.

"None of E4B's 40,000 SME customers will be cut off as they will be transferred to a supplier allocated by Industry watchdog Ofgem. They have a duty of care to E4B's customers and will therefore follow standard industry practice to select an alternative energy provider.

"The onus is now on existing E4B customers to get the next best deal. We strongly advise them to shop around as it's possible that those moving to Ofgem's appointed supplier could be placed on less attractive rates. There are some extremely competitive rates available in the SME energy market place today so E4B customers, and all other SME energy customers reviewing their energy needs, should move swiftly to take advantage of them."

• I have changed my electricity supplier to BG 37.59p per day standing charge and 9.77 kWh today - 01162 00 8382 Gary. My rate with E4B used to be 44.69p per day and 8.080 p/kWh. Lucky I got my rebate of £1067 on 15/10/08 before they went belly up. I have cancelled my direct debit. Service was bad with E4B.

Just ask yourself do you want to be tied to a contract with the Big 6?

Here at Utility Warehouse we give you peace of mind that we will be cheaper than BG and cheaper than your regional energy supplier and yes no contract
If you would like a quote for all your utility requirements contact andrew0516@talktalk.net

• As an ex E4B customer, I am extremely angry at the way British Gas have been dealing with their windfall of helpless new customers. We were contacted from the ubiquitous 'International number' call center about a week after E4B went bust. British gas sales to tell me they are appointed to take over all E4B contracts, and that they could give me a good deal if I sign up with them. The deal was: 26.05/day standing charge, 13.39p/unit days; 7.60p/unit nights; 1.06p/unit eve and w/end.
We already had better prices than that from nPower, and said as much.
30 second conversation 'With my manager' and the rep came back with 12.20p; 6.97p and 9.19p respectively. Maximum contract term, 12 months, and no rate cap available. 'Prices will be falling, so its not good to cap' was the pitch.
We declined to accept, and confirmed our intention to go with nPower.
The rep then said 'If you agree a contract with B.Gas, we will give you the low rates as from time we took over from E4B. If you choose to go with another supplier, you will be on uncontracted rate of 12.9p/unit untill transfer to a new provider is complete'
He then added the crunch line.......... ' It will take 4 weeks for us to transfer your details from E4B to B. Gas, then another 4 weeks to transfer again to a new provider'
So if we sign with B.Gas, we get instant low prices, backdated to the demise of E4B. Otherwise we get stung with uncontracted prices for as long as B.Gas can string it out for!
We calculate that this ploy will cost us about £150 over the top of our usual electricity bill for those 8 weeks.
With upwards of 40,000 E4B contracts to play with, what a nice little windfall for British gas to be handed by OFGEM.
I rang OFGEM to complain about this virtual blackmail. Their advice was .....
'Write to your MP about the matter, we agree that you have a justifiable complaint, but we (OFGEM) have no power to act.'
So much for Government appointed watchdogs!
Duly written to my MP, and advised nPOWER of all the details.
AND THEN..........
International call........... 'British Gas sales here......' and the whole cycle kicked off again..... only this time, the prices offered had jumped considerably. 36.39/day standing charge, 14.39/unit day rate; 7.90p/unit night rate and 10.30p/unit Eve/W.ends.
So much for prices falling and capping being unwise!
Unsuprisingly, I am unable to obtain anything in writing from B.Gas confirming any of this........... the excuse today was that they are trying to deal with 40,000 customers and don't have time to be able to write or email them with the details 'Unless they have agreed a verbal contract'
Apologies for a long winded post, but British Gas's sharp practice has really made me mad - after all - they ASKED for the E4B business, we weren't just dumped on them!
