Help, Runtime error in Word ?

Be grateful for some help, advice re WORD. I received an email today with a word attachment, it is from a known source, minutes of a recent meeting. However it wont let me undo it, comes up with the following :

Runtime Error

program:c:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft\office10\WINWORD.EXE

abnormal programme termination.

Help, what has gone wrong and how do I fix it please ?

Comments

  • Can you actually start up Word? If you can, on the main menu click Help - Detect and Repair.

See if that fixes the problem. If not, let us know: you might have to do a repair/reinstall using the Word CD.

Chippy I have followed your instructions, and it said that it had completed successfully, however the problem remains.

What do you suggest next ?

Thank you for your help, it isn't good being a computer numpty.

Go into Explorer, find the default template normal.dot and delete it.

Well thats all I could find, I would do a fresh install of office.

Do a windows search, Start, Search, All files and folders, More advanced options,
search hidden files and folders, all or part of the file name, insert,, normal.dot
when it appears in a search right click it and delete it..

This is from the wab not me so if you dont feel comfortable doing it, then dont.

And choose to reinstall Office or Works.
  • The normal.dot file is in C:\Documents and Settings\yourName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to that location.
