I have a Sony VA10 desktop running on Windows XP. I'm wanting to upgrade the ram.
Currently it has 256 ddr MB & 80 GB harddrive. It's intel pentium 4.
Anyone advise what I should be buying?

www.crucial.com not only will it scan your computer so you get the right memory needed but will give you various choices (ie faster stuff etc)
also its bloody cheapIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

More expensive than most other providers.
Won't necessarily tell you what is inside the machine, but what they have in stock that will work in your machine.
So if you have PC2100 onboard but Crucial only stock PC2700, guess what RAM the Crucial Tool will recommend?
Those various choices make the selection far more confusing for novices. e.g. Putting the more expensive ECC RAM at the top of the list when Non ECC is required.0 -

well I don't know which one your using but it worked fine for me and it does tell you want is inside your machine, and has on the many pc's i've scanned with it (even home built pc's)
i never said it was the cheapest but cheap (4GB of DDR2 800 for 50 quid)
and if you have your motherboard manual (or go to its makers website) as you should do when buying new hardware for your pc! then it will be quite clear what you can buy......it just gives you more than one option
how is that confusing??If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

Your second post is even more ridiculous than your first, so I'll say no more on the matter.....
Oh ok, I can hardly resist it..... If the people on here could just look at their "motherboard manuals"....why on earth would they need to use the Crucial scanning tool?
Just too silly.
Use CPU-Z to find out what is inside your machine, not just what Crucial wants to sell to you.
Thank you for pointing out that they are not cheap at all, just that you can afford to pay the extra. Just checked; Funky Giraffe 43.98 inc delivery. Crucial UK 58.74 for the 4 GB that you mentioned.0 -

I was interested in the CPU-Z and downloaded it and its a nice little application. I would also recommend it too, although I use the crucial scanning tool, but you dont have to purchase there RAM just use it for information and go buy some sticks of RAM of Ebay or another stockist.
I would recommened both. the CPUZ Information dump into the text file is a nice function."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

As a novice, I'll check out both to see if I learn anything
