Diff between XP prof. and XP media

Hi,

Can anybody let me know what is the difference between the OS, XP Professional and XP media centre.
I am interested in knowing whether the XP media has IIS server ?

i have media center 2005, it cerainly hasnt got IIS, its more a media PC based thing.. I.E like a PC for the living room with a TV card that you can watch and record telly on... esentially what it is is windows XP Professional with a mediaplayer thing that runs at the start up.... its a bit rubbish in fairness! there is better things outhere...

well my XP Media Centre 2005 has IIS. Have you tried to install it?

XP MCE is just XP Pro but with an addition app called "Media Centre". the only big let down for it is, you cant add it to a domain once you have got the OS installed. But there is work arounds floating around on the internet (google it).

I think MCE is great, totally disagree with Alfie. Sorry.

MCE 2005 has IIS among a few things it shares with XP Pro. It is another version of XP and not really like either Pro or Home editions... more inbetween if anything.

yes you can install it.... and you can on xp pro? so how is that diffrent from one another?

whopsie my bad i didt see the bit about him asking if IIS was on there.. just if it was different lol....

esentially i cant see the point of it.... for what its aimed at Media center PCs, its just xp pro with an app that runs.... there is no corporate version of it, and you cant add it to a domain, so i still stand by what i said there are far better products that you can run on xp pro for media cernter pcs.media center doesnt even support my tv card :rolleyes:

MCE doesn't have things like File Access Control, Group Policies, Hidden Admin Shares, Roaming User Profiles, Remote Installation Service, and certain Administrative Tools. As examples. Mainly things that you'd use in the office/business environment.

Alfie is right. MCE is basically XP pro with the MCE app. Everything is there, and if its disabled there are work arounds. I have had MCE's in a corprate position running as a admin machine, never had any problems.

Oh, I stand corrected on the Users Policies and Shares. In business terms though, MCE doesn't have Domain Join and Cached Credentials so has problems accessing network shares, and being accessed itself (it can't join domains). You'd have to re-authenticate each time you rebooted. It's basically business end services (with regards to domains) that aren't included as MCE is designed for the home.

Even if it doesn't you could download Apache (The web server) and away you go.
