WARNING :Mbl trick numbers

Be very careful . Some mobile numbers are more costly than you think because they aren't charged at the mobile rate but at NTS rate .

I rang 078361xxxxx recently , I believe Vodafone from my landline and got landed with a bill of about 80p.

It should have cost me a lot less because I have a deal to mobiles with my CPS provider.

You would have thought all 07 numbers are to mobiles but oh no, those useless gits at OFcon allow these scams.

(also beware of 070 numbers, don't phone them they are scams also , covered elsewhere on this board)

To check see here.

  • Perhaps it would have been cheaper to use www.18185.co.uk to call it.

That number series probably isn't used for actual mobiles, but perhaps for stuff like Vodafone customer services, e.g. 07836191191. You can find other ways to call the company more cheaply; see the saynoto0870 site.

The rate you are complaining about is actually cheaper from BT than calling a mobile, not 80 pence a minute as I first assumed from not reading your post carefully enough

If you are complaining that your provider charges differently, why not refer them to the BT schedule of charges?

The whole 07 numbering range is a minefield. For example, the 07836 range subject of this thread are charged:

    07836 1 - National NTS
    07836 2/3/4/5/6/7 - fm5 (13p Day/8p Evening/5p Weekends)
    07836 8 - c (12.58p Day/7.29p Evenings/3.85p Weekends
    07836 9 - National NTS

But the nearby 07839 group is all charge code f (Calls to Personal Numbering Services and Mobile telephones - 30p Day/20p Evening/10p Weekends).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Man I thought all 07 numbers were mobiles :(

070 numbers are personal numbers and can cost up to 50p/min to call them from landlines. They are used so as not to give out your real number mobile or otherwise, you can set up hunt numbers on them, so you enter for example 6 numbers you have and when someone calls the 070 number to tried the first number in the list to contact you, then the 2nd, then the 3rd and so on. First issued at a time when porting your number wasn't available.

Not all 070 numbers are used for scams.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Yes, but this particular example is something of a historic glitch.

I believe 0836 was the first prefix used by Vodafone. At the time, mobile calls may have been more expensive from a landline than now, while the national rate was 8 pence a minute for all landlines. So, having the cheaper rate for customer services from a landline was probably thought to be generous at the time.
