Is this legal? Any advice?

Evening all!

Just wondering if the person concerned is entitled to any additional help or if they need to see Citizens Advice... any advice from you all gratefully received!

Person A (male, 60, married, homeowner, no dependents, cash cow for Gordon Brown, long term employed, semi skilled, not entitled to benefits except winter fuel) works for a local company. This local company has laid off many staff, and is still in the process of 'streamlining'.

Person A's job is relatively safe. The company recently announced an enforced two week shutdown as orders were dropping.
Week 1 of shutdown - pay is the week in hand. (they are weekly paid.)
Week 2 - £20 per day retainer = £100 for week.
Week 3 (back to work) No pay - working week in hand.

Now while they are aware that this may help the company reduce their costs and secure some jobs, this will leave Person A with effectively one and a half week's wages short in a month. This is not helpful when, as for everyone else, prices are rising and they manage pretty much hand to mouth as it is. No holidays, drink in moderation, spare cash goes on getting the house up together for their impending retirement.

As Person A and his colleagues are not being made redundant, there seems to be little available help - and what is to stop the company doing the same thing every few weeks and keeping their staff hanging on like puppets, unable to claim benefits? :eek:

Any suggestions?

  • As he`s married its unlikely if his partner works that he`d be entitled to any help,I know its of little help but they do advise that everyone has enough savings to see them through 3 months without income.
