MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Would you intervene?

  • Once again the sheer dishonesty of some of the people on these forums never ceases to amaze me. Saving money honestly is one thing but saving it dishonestly amounts to theft. If I was the person in the queue and I had genuinely dropped the £10 note I would have been very pleased that someone had brought it to my attention. It is what I would want someone else to do if it was me that had dropped the money, therefore, it is what I would do if I had found the money on the floor. Some people think that is is naive but if everyone did what they would WANT someone else to do rather than what they THINK someone else would do (ie nick the money) then the world would be a much better, more trusting place.
Having brought it to the other person's attention, if they then choose to either lie and say that it is their money, or promise to hand it in but then don't, that is a matter for their conscience and has absolutely nothing to do with me. After all I have done the right thing and that is all that matters to me. I would keep quiet to avoid a confrontation but it would definitely not stop me from doing the same thing again.
  • If i'd seen who had dropped it, then I would give it back!

If it was just lying on the floor with no obvious owner, I would pocket it!

    Simple...
I may be shy, but that doesn't make me an angel ;)

I don't believe that anyone would find a tenner on the floor, pick it up, and then find a charity box and put it in there.

I did. Well, not a tenner... it was £20.
  • I would definetly say something. I would expect them to give me half. If they refused then I would accept it without a fuss.... Well actually I would probably have to make a comment like SELFISH *******. Then again is it worth getting into a fight and probably stabbed over a tenner??? NAHHHHHH
  • Something similar happened to me once, was out at a club for a friends' birthday, was at the bar with him (where he was ordering a huge round and refusing to let me contribute) when I looked down and saw a tenner on the floor. I picked it up and gave it straight to the birthday boy to put towards the drinks! At a bar that crowded there was almost no chance the original owner would have got it back.

In the MMD situation I probaby wouldn't have said anything as I wouldn't like to cause a scene in public!

I found a wallet in my local MacDonalds, it was packed! Maybe with receipts but it could have been cash.
Before I knew what I was doing the good samaritan in me was hading the wallet to the monkeys at MacDonalds. As soon as I'd done it I regretted it so much. The teen on the counter handed it to the manager (who could not have been much older) and I literally saw his face light up.
I felt like such a fool, and for the rest of the day couldnt help wondering whether the owner of the wallet actually got it back with its original contents. Being a not very confident 5ft nothing woman, I didnt feel I could go and kick up a stick and ask for it back so I didn't, I wish I had asked for it back and found the owner myself, I STILL feel rotten about it to this very day....................
I've handed in wallets to the police on several occations-- much safer (I hope!) than McD's staff. If this wasn't that long ago, you could ask after it, the next time you're there...? (or maybe the manager's face lit up because it was his? :rotfl:I know, a girl can but hope!)

Regarding the original question: I wouldn't have the guts to ask after it, but would be huffy and vent to all my friends!

  • I dropped a £20 note in London Bridge station while in the queue at a fast food joint and thankfully the person behind me gave it back to me - would have noticed when I came to pay as it was all I had. I was very grateful and paid for his meal - with bite card 20% discount of course so only lost £4 in the end! Was very glad of his honesty!
If I didn't see who dropped it then that's a different matter :j
  • The money was not mine to start with. The money wasn't their's either. What they did was theft. While I would have no claim on the note I am sure I would have muttered, 'Thief.' under my breath; in an audible manner.
  • I probably sound terribly moralistic, but thank goodness I only go into a fast food chain if there's no other option - what a bunch of thieving whatsits they seem to attract (apart from those who would put the money into a charity box). I can't believe how many think a tenner is nothing. Having had my rant, I'd pick it up, secrete it, then ask if anyone had dropped anything(no nothing rude!)returning the note to it's rightful owner (or the clever person who watched me). If there were no takers maybe then my family would get a small treat.....
  • Someone left five pounds in the self service till in Tesco, I called after him, it was his and he said 'thank you'. I felt good. If someone drops money in front of me, I tell them. If I find money in the street, I look around, if no one is looking for the money then I take it and either give it to the homeless/ the big issue seller or someone else so that someone benefits and not myself.

If I found a wallet in a store/ restaurant, I would size up the Manager and then advise them but would take the wallet to the Police station myself.

Finally, I believe if you find money in a store etc then it's the stores property in the absense of an owner. If you take that money and keep it then it is theft as if you stole £10 worth of stock from the shelves.

IF I were to hand in a wallet or money to a Store Manager etc, then I'd ask for a receipt so that I could follow it up or maybe advertise the loss in a news paper.

SORRY, got carried away - would I challenge the person ahead? yes i would. I'd bring to their attention the fact that they are captured on CCTV and would need to defend themselves to the Police should this go any further!!
